- Introduction: Si Gua Luo (Fasciculus Vascularis Luffae) is the dried fibrous vascular network of a mature Luffa cylindrica (sponge gourd/loofah) fruit after the pulp has been removed, widely used both as a scrubbing sponge and as a TCM herb. First documented in the Ben Cao Gang Mu (1578 CE), this sweet and neutral herb is uniquely described as able to ‘unblock all channels’ — an analogy to its mesh-like physical form that penetrates every part of the network. It gently clears Heat and Wind-Damp from the channels, moves Qi and Blood, and promotes lactation. Saponins and polysaccharides contribute to its mild anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects in modern pharmacological studies.
Action
- Unblocks the channels and collaterals throughout the body
- Dispels Wind-Damp and clears Heat from the channels
- Moves Qi and Blood to relieve chest and rib-side pain
- Promotes lactation and reduces breast swelling
Clinical Application
- Wind-Damp-Heat Bi-syndrome with joint pain, muscle stiffness, and channel obstruction
- Chest and rib-side pain from Qi and Blood stagnation in the Liver channel
- Insufficient lactation from Qi and Blood stagnation in the breast channels
- Mastitis with breast swelling and pain (combined with Pu Gong Ying)
- Upper limb numbness and pain — gentle guiding herb to the extremities
Precautions
- Dose: 5–12 g in decoction; charred Si Gua Luo (Si Gua Luo Tan) used for hemostatic applications
- Generally safe and mild; sweet neutral nature makes it well tolerated long-term
- Avoid as a sole herb for Cold Bi-syndrome without Heat component — combine with warming herbs
- No significant contraindications in standard doses
Formula
- Combined with Sang Zhi and Ji Xue Teng for upper limb numbness, tingling, and pain from channel obstruction
- Combined with Chai Hu, Bai Shao, and Xiang Fu for rib-side pain and distension from Liver Qi stagnation
- Combined with Wang Bu Liu Xing, Tong Cao, and Mu Tong for insufficient lactation
- Combined with Pu Gong Ying and Lian Qiao for mastitis with heat and swelling
Combinations
- Loofah Sponge (丝瓜络) + Mulberry Twig (桑枝) + Star Jasmine Stem (络石藤) → expel wind-damp, unblock the channels; upper limb painful impediment and joint pain
- Loofah Sponge (丝瓜络) + Vaccaria Seed (王不留行) + Pangolin Scale (穿山甲) → unblock the channels, promote lactation; insufficient milk from channel obstruction
Pharmacological Effects
- Anti-inflammatory
- flavonoids — reduce joint and soft-tissue inflammation
- Analgesic; promotes lactation
- unblocks milk ducts mechanically and biochemically
- antioxidant; mild diuretic; physical network structure of luffa sponge symbolically and functionally unblocks channels; used in TCM for anything in the chest/breast/rib area — unblocks chest collaterals; topically as a scrubbing sponge in traditional bathing for skin circulation
Classic Description
- Ben Cao Gang Mu (《本草纲目》): ‘Loofah Sponge can permeate the human channels, collaterals, and organs; expels wind and resolves toxin; reduces swelling and transforms phlegm; eliminates pain and kills parasites; and treats blood diseases.’
- Ben Cao Bian Du (《本草便读》): ‘Loofah Sponge enters the channels and collaterals; cools blood heat; its nature is cold; treats wind-heat swelling and toxin; frees the channels and activates the collaterals; resolves toxin and reduces swelling; expels wind and transforms dampness; and can promote lactation.’
- Ben Cao Zai Xin (《本草再新》): ‘Permeates the channels and collaterals; harmonizes the blood vessels; transforms phlegm and directs qi; treats insufficient lactation.’
